Chapter 5.

“- Nine Months.” – Said the doctor.

“- Are you saying that I spent nine months in this bed?” – I was stunned. No matter how little awareness I had of the time that had passed by, I never though it would’ve been that much.

“- To be honest with you, Sir, I am still very surprised that you have spent those months in a bed and not in a coffin. We all thought your death was certain. I never saw someone recover from the wounds you suffered before. It is truly a miracle.”

“- Miracle or not, let’s not push it, doctor” – said Pedro as he walked in – “He probably needs some rest now. You can continue your test examinations later.” – The doctor nodded and left.

It had been about a month since I first saw him sneaking into my room, but by now we were already becoming very good friends.

“- Pedro, I’m fine. I can’t stand to be another day in this bed. Why didn’t you tell me it had been that long already?”

“- It would do you no good. And you’re right. You can’t stand. That’s exactly the reason why you will stay there. You heard the doctor. Be grateful. Maybe in a couple of weeks you will be walking all over the place already. But now you need to rest.”

“- Where is Daniella?” – I asked – “It’s been days since I last saw her.”

“- Give her some time. She still feels guilty about it. She thinks she is responsible for your near death, and I can’t blame her. You were badly beaten. Too much badly, to be sure. Mind you she watched them hit you time after time until the police finally arrived and they ran away. She was in shock, so they didn’t even pay attention to you before almost half an hour had passed by, simply because they thought you were already dead. When the medics arrived they were startled to see you were still breathing.” – He seemed to hesitate for a bit, and then continued – “She still has nightmares, you know? Just give her some time. She will feel better when she sees you walking again. Now rest.”
“- Ok.” – I conceded – “And Pedro… Thank you too”. – It was the first time I said that. He noticed the “too”, froze for a few seconds, and then let out a wink before leaving the room.
